Project - Mr. Ghoshal Residence

Client’s Requirements

The client had taken possession of two adjacent flats which had been resold to them. They were a part of the large complex 'Rail Vihar', a residential complex of railway officers in New Town, Kolkata. One apartment had existing in-built furniture, mostly of ply and laminate. The other apartment was empty but freshly painted.

Initial Site Condition

Mr. & Mrs. Ghoshal being retired high profile Railway officers were used to living in spacious well-lit bungalows. They wanted the ambience to be recreated. The toilets and kitchen and other elements that create the mood of an inferior space, like doors and windows were also to be charged entirely and upgraded. Furniture from their old quarters had to be reassembled here with a new look.

Solution

On completion the two merged apartments gave a spacious feeling. In many cases two rooms were made into one big bedroom after dismantling the non-load-bearing wall in between. Same was done for the toilets and kitchen. The old plain flush doors and furniture were blended in the new set up with addition of teak wood beads, cornices and matching wall panelling. The smaller existing toilets were fitted with new faucets, fittings, tiles with distinct wet and dry zones. A lot of thought was given to lighting and illumination... accentuating and highlighting areas where required.

Most challenging

Adjusting new toilet concepts with existing old plumbing lines. It was also very difficult to give a new modified look to all of their old furniture.
